The need to incorporate Automation, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP), into workflows in order to remain competitive is the force driving an increased demand for machine translation. Iconic’s cutting edge technology is supported by its team of dedicated scientists, who push the envelope when it comes to incorporating the latest advances. As Iconic grows, so does our team, and we are happy to welcome Dr. Jingyi Han as our newest Machine Translation scientist.
We recently chatted with Jingyi to learn more about her and her new role at Iconic.
Hi Jingyi, welcome to Iconic! Could you tell us a bit about yourself and where you are from?
I come from China. My background is in Computational Linguistics and my research has mainly focused on Machine Translation (MT). I developed an interest in MT while working towards my Master’s degree. During that time, we had some optional subjects of Translation Technologies, from which I learned different MT strategies and approaches. I found it very interesting, so I decided to focus my master dissertation on Chinese-Spanish Machine Translation quality analysis and evaluation. After several experiments with the most popular MT engines at the time, I realised there was still a lot of work to be done to improve the performance. So, I continued my PhD research in this area and have been working as a machine translation engineer ever since.
Describe your role of Machine Translation Scientist at Iconic:
I am involved in the development of customised translation engines. My role, as a Machine Translation Scientist, is to adapt the latest strategies to deliver promising translation quality and provide fast and effective solutions to solve customer problems.
What is your favorite aspect about being a Machine Translation Scientist?
Compared to doing research, here we can apply what we have learned to solve real world challenges. I love being an MT scientist because it addresses language applications with computational means. It perfectly combines my passion for linguistics with interesting AI technologies.
What attracted you to Iconic?
I knew about Iconic from my research stay in the ADAPT centre during my PhD. Since Iconic was a spin-off company from academia, the outcome is built on research in this area and the team is always following the latest MT technologies. I am happy to be working on some exciting projects, being able to apply the research to real world challenges. I am delighted to be a part of the Iconic family!
What are your hobbies and interests?
I enjoy photography, travelling and experiencing new cultures. My plan is to travel to one new country every year – as soon as it is safe to do so!
