Meet Akshai Ramesh, Iconic’s newest Machine Translation Scientist!
This week Iconic has expanded our scientific team. We are happy to introduce to you our newest Machine Translation Scientist, Akshai Ramesh. Akshai recently completed a Master’s degree in Data Analytics from Dublin City University, bringing a valuable skill set to the team.
We recently had a chat with Akshai to get to know him better.
Hi Akshai, welcome to Iconic! Could you tell us a bit about yourself and where you are from?
Thanks for your warm welcome. I come from Tamilnadu, which is in the southern part of India. My father worked for the Indian Air Force and due to the nature of his job, I had the opportunity to travel all over India during my childhood. And I must say that I enjoyed every moment of meeting people from different states, learning their culture and their languages. I believe that this initiated my fascination for languages and linguistics.
After completion of my undergraduate degree in Computer Science, I worked for Zoho Corporation, India as a Data Scientist, where I was responsible for the CRM Automation and Chatbot Configuration framework. This was a stepping stone toward taking a deeper dive into my interest in linguistics. I moved to Ireland to complete a Masters degree in Data Analytics from Dublin City University. As part of my Master’s research practicum, I worked on the Low-resource Neural Machine Translation Scenario with Prof. Andy Way and Dr. Rejwanul Haque from the Adapt Research Centre. And following that, I am now happy to be a part of the Iconic team!
Iconic has a substantial team of Machine Translation Scientists. How does your unique background complement this mix?
I believe that my graduate degree in data analytics and interest in linguistics is the right combination to help solve real world MT problems. To add, I am excited to work among Iconic’s top class MT team and contribute to the wide spectrum of innovations that serve our clients.
What is your favorite aspect about being a Machine Translation Scientist?
Given my passion for computer science and linguistics, I am naturally drawn towards MT, which is an interdisciplinary field that combines the two. I see this position as an opportunity to solve real world MT problems through Deep learning & AI. Nothing makes me happier than developing end-to-end enterprise solutions for real world MT problems!
What attracted you to Iconic?
I learned about Iconic when I first moved to Ireland. MT is challenging, and providing bespoke enterprise solutions is not a trivial task. The Iconic team makes it look so easy! I love the way they combine applied research to real world MT problems. I am very happy to be a part of a fast-growing mission oriented company in the field of Neural Machine Translation.
What are your hobbies and interests?
Basically, I have wanderlust and am always fascinated by the beauty of nature. So in my leisure time, I don’t miss a chance to travel to new places. In addition, I have a food blog where I often exhibit my culinary skills. Apart from this, I enjoy watching movies/series for relaxation.
