Dublin – 19 September 2019 – Iconic Translation Machines announces the official launch of PRINCIPLE: a European Commission-funded project aimed at providing language data to improve translation quality in the European Digital Service Infrastructures (DSIs) of eJustice and eProcurement via domain-specific Neural Machine Translation. PRINCIPLE will focus on under-resourced languages including Croatian, Icelandic, Irish, and Norwegian, and members of the project consortium met in Dublin this week to officially kick things off.
Led by project coordinator, Prof. Andy Way, of the ADAPT Centre at Dublin City University, other members of the consortium include the University of Zagreb, the University of Iceland, and the National Library of Norway, with Iconic being the sole industry partner on the project.
Iconic’s role is to build domain-adapted Neural MT engines for Irish, Norwegian, Icelandic, and Croatian, working directly with early adopters across both public and private sectors in each country. Early adopters will share language resources with the project consortium and they will then, in turn, have the opportunity to avail of Iconic’s bespoke Neural MT engines throughout the duration of the project.
Iconic’s CEO, Dr. John Tinsley, commented “We are delighted to get the PRINCIPLE project underway. It will be exciting to work with the early adopters and learn of their different use cases in languages which are generally considered to be under-resourced with respect to machine translation. This plays well to Iconic’s strengths in building bespoke solutions.”
PRINCIPLE will contribute to a growing and sustainable ecosystem of Language Resources for European languages, to foster their long-term (re)use, and extend the work of other recently EU-funded projects. By improving the Digital Service Infrastructure building block of eTranslation, Iconic and the PRINCIPLE consortium will be contributing to the European vision of delivering digitally networked cross-border services for citizens, businesses and public administrations.
