IPTranslator has been in development since early 2010. The origins of the service can been found in the European Commission supported PLUTO (Patent Language Translations Online) project (ICT-PSP-250416) fronted by the world leading machine translation group at the Centre for Next Generation Localisation at Dublin City University in Ireland. Other partners included ESTeam GmbH, who amongst other providers of language processing software for trademarks at OHIM, CrossLang NV, a Belgian based company specialising the in holistic evaluation of translation technology, and WON – the Dutch Patent Information User Group.
WON’s expertise in the area of intellectual property and patent information has been instrumental in the development of IPTranslator and has provided an extremely solid foundation for the service.
An early version of the machine translation technology behind IPTranslator was integrated into the European Patent Office’s search service, Espacenet, for a 6 month period between September 2010 and March 2011. During this time, we translated more than 15,000 patent documents between English and Portuguese. Subsequently, the service was launched in private beta in October 2011 with the public beta launch taking place in March 2012. IPTranslator as it exists now was launched fully in late 2012 and is now promoted under the umbrella of Iconic Translation Machines Ltd., provider of advanced domain-adapted machine translation technology.
