We’re on a roll! Last week on May 25th, Iconic attended the highly anticipated VIVA Technology event in Paris to participate in the finals of an open challenge run by Novartis

This challenge,  entitled “Automated translation and interpretation of unstructured, non-English Adverse Event reports”, was set to help Novartis address a problem they have of managing, translating, and interpreting adverse event reports at scale (patients reporting drug side effects).  After a competitive selection process, Iconic was invited, along with three other finalists, to participate in this competition at VivaTech. The aim of the presentation was to find solutions to the challenge of translation and interpretation of multilingual adverse event reports.  The four finalists presented their proposals to a team of judges from Novartis.

The Iconic solution, presented by John Tinsley,  introduced our Neural Machine Translation (NMT) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) solutions.  Specifically, John spoke of our collaboration with Chemical Abstract Services on ChemZent which presented many similar challenges.  The ChemZent project required several areas of expertise from our team: custom MT, OCR, information extraction, machine learning, and AI.  Iconic developed innovative machine learning technology to extend its existing solutions for the large-scale digitisation, translation and indexing of 140 years’ worth of German journals and patents.

Aligning our experience with ChemZent to this proposal, John described how knowledge based medical dictionaries could be created to train both NMT engines, and entity recognition and extraction solutions for Novartis’ challenge. After a strong set of presentations and Q&A, the judges had a long and passionate deliberation and ultimately declared Iconic the winner. John was delighted to receive the award on behalf of Iconic (pictured above).  The Iconic team now looks forward to working with Novartis on developing a product for this challenge.

Congratulations to the other finalists, and importantly to our team for their hard work!
