Iconic CEO John Tinsley: featured speaker at the eDiscovery and Information Governance conference

Iconic CEO John Tinsley: guest speaker at the e-Discovery and Information Governance conference

The 4th annual  eDiscovery and Information Governance conference  was the place to be for anyone seeking to learn about key developments, trends, and evolving technology in the world of e-discovery.  This conference, Ireland’s only such dedicated event, was held November 10th at the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) Concert Hall in Dublin, and did not disappoint attending delegates who enjoyed talks from leading Irish and international experts.

Iconic was well represented with CEO John Tinsley,  Head of Global Strategy Páraic Sheridan, and Global Head of Sales & Marketing Diane O’Reilly on hand to support this informative and beneficial event. The 200 delegates included members of the judiciary, in-house counsel, litigators, data investigators, regulators, forensic professionals, barristers, law enforcement, consultants, and commercial managers.  It was a real Who’s Who of e-discovery practitioners and experts from Ireland and the UK, with guests and speakers who had traveled in from Germany and the U.S.

The keynote speaker, U.S. Attorney and Forensic Technologist Craig Ball, focused on three main issues in his presentation; the emergence of data as evidence in lieu of documents, the need for counsel to confront electronic evidence, and the relevance of mobile and Internet of Things content as evidence in civil litigation and corporate investigation.  This last point highlights the explosion of Electronically Stored Information (ESI) and its relevancy to discovery.  He stressed that although it may seem challenging to work with so much data, technology will keep pace to assist, so it’s really up to the community of practitioners to keep pace with the latest technology!

The venue, the RDS Concert Hall, was the perfect backdrop for Craig’s opening keynote, representing both old and new as the full length of the Hall is lined with historic books from the RDS Library’s important collections.

We are clearly seeing rapid growth in the number of cross-border litigation and regulatory investigations.  A simple look at the increased use of social media and big data, just a small part of the data explosion, presents challenges to the discovery of ESI.  Facing an estimate that 80% of all litigation will be multilingual by 2020, it’s essential to be prepared.  That means putting in place tools and technology to analyse multilingual data early on in the review process.  Given the ever increasing volume of multilingual data, translation software and language technologies are playing a critical role in keeping costs down and processes moving forward.

In light of this, John’s presentation about the latest translation technology trends within e-discovery was very well received.  Relevancy is key.  The audience was particularly interested to hear about live cases which have leveraged Machine Translation (MT) technology. John delved into one example where Iconic created a scalable e-discovery MT solution for Donnelley Financial Solutions that was easily integrated into an end-to-end translation workflow for highly sensitive content in a complex litigation case. The secure, cost-effective solution led to the machine translation of millions of words for review, saving substantial time and costs.  You can check out the full case study here.

John also spoke of the recent advances in MT, particularly the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered translation, and how it has made MT technology an integral tool in the arsenal of the e-discovery professional.  The session wound down with a number of questions on key topics of interest including data management and security, integration options, and a look to the future of language technologies.

Iconic thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this well organised and relevant event.  It was nice to be able to mingle and network with everyone in such an inviting atmosphere throughout the day.  We’d like to extend our thanks to everyone who came to speak with us at our booth and to the organisers, La Touche Training,  for their superb professionalism and hosting skills.

Given the overwhelming response to John’s presentation, we followed up this event with a Webinar on November 16th to further explain and delve into the growing role of translation software in e-discovery, compliance and big data.  We will be making the webinar available online next week so make sure to check it out.
