Iconic presents on IP, AI, and Neural MT at the EPO Patent Information Conference 2017

These are busy days for Iconic as our CEO John Tinsley hit the road again, this time to beautiful Sofia, Bulgaria, to attend the EPO Patent Information Conference from November 7-9. The European Patent Office (EPO) supports innovation, competitiveness and economic growth across Europe. As one of the leading patent information events in Europe, this EPO conference is always on our calendar, with patent professionals, patent office officials, and technology providers on hand to advise on the latest developments in the patent arena.

With an increasing number of market-leading technology providers at the event, it’s often difficult to grasp what each one has to offer.  This isn’t the case at the EPO Patent Information Conference though, as delegates look forward to and enjoy seeing the rapid fire exhibitor presentations held in the main auditorium.  Quick and simple, each exhibitor gives a short presentation affording everyone the opportunity to learn what’s new in the marketplace.  This year we noticed a surge in new products that are looking to change the face of patent search, as well as data providers promoting their “improved” Machine Translation (MT) technologies as a result of neural and other advancements.

In addition to taking part in the exhibitor presentation, John went on to host a seminar entitled “Artificial Intelligence (AI) for patent information and translation”  in which he provided insight into Iconic’s successful collaboration with CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society.

Two hot topics everyone was talking about at the conference were AI and MT.  John’s well received talk included both as he described the work Iconic carried out on the CAS ChemZent collaboration and also discussed one of our favorite topics: “the ins and outs of MT”. The CAS  collaboration required several areas of expertise: custom MT, OCR, information extraction, machine learning, and AI.  Iconic developed innovative machine learning technology to extend its existing MT and Natural Language Processing (NLP) solutions for the large-scale digitisation, translation and indexing of 140 years’ worth of German journals and patents. Customising proprietary MT technology for historical chemical information with statistical and neural approaches, Iconic also developed NLP technologies for digitisation of 800,000 PDFs, and extraction and fielding of 3 million abstracts by author and title. The work that went into creating the ChemZent product is as impressive as the product itself!  For more information, check out our case study.

Sofia is a welcoming and lovely city to visit. As always a huge success, one of the highlights of the conference was the excellent networking event at the Military Club.  We’d like to extend our thanks to everyone who attended our talk or came to visit our stand. We look forward to seeing you next year. Destination to be confirmed!
