Iconic CEO to share key findings of Neural MT research at GALA 2017 Amsterdam
- CEO to share detailed analysis of early NMT output from collaboration with ADAPT Centre at GALA 2017
- Findings to provide valuable insight into where NMT might have the most impact for end users
Dublin – December 15, 2016 – Iconic Translation Machines (Iconic), a leading Irish machine translation (MT) software and solutions provider, today announces that CEO John Tinsley will be speaking at the GALA annual conference 2017, being held at the Hotel Okura Amsterdam from March 26 to 29, 2017.
In his talk on ”The New Frontier for Machine Translation: The Neural Frontier“, John will describe a collaborative initiative between Iconic and the world-leading MT research group at the ADAPT Centre, Dublin City University, on Neural MT (NMT). By looking at the relative pros and cons of the respective approaches to MT, the talk will provide valuable insight into where NMT might be able to have the most immediate impact for end users.
The Gala annual conference brings together top level localisation industry executives for three days of talks, panels, workshops, and networking. Featuring speakers from Microsoft and IBM, GALA’s annual “Language of Business” conference is a key event in the localisation industry calendar.
John will be delivering his talk on NMT on Monday morning following the keynote presentation to the Language Technology track. NMT has been a dominant topic of conversation in the MT industry recently, promising a new paradigm in the space. As always with breakthrough technologies, it can be hard to separate hype from reality. This talk aims to do just that.
Based on deep learning and artificial intelligence, NMT promises a new paradigm in natural language processing. As neural networks can directly learn the relationship between two languages, NMT systems are expected to dramatically impact on MT quality by producing more natural sounding and accurate translations for morphologically rich languages. However, while it has been heralded as the next big thing by the MT research community and among some of the Internet MT giants, systematic comparison with large-scale, production-quality, phrase-based translation systems has been lacking to some degree. Iconic has been going one step ahead by undertaking this exact systematic comparison of NMT with its superior quality production MT systems in collaboration with the ADAPT research centre.
Drawing on our ongoing collaboration, John will provide a qualitative comparison of translation output across different languages and projects, such as patent information and eDiscovery content, including the practical implications of both. By sharing detailed analysis of early NMT output, John will provide a much clearer indication as to the areas where NMT might be able to have the most immediate impact for end users.
“GALA 2017 Amsterdam marks the 6th consecutive year of Iconic’s attendance at GALA. We are delighted to be able to come back each year to learn about key technological developments, the latest industry trends, and to share our own insight and expertise about new and significant MT developments and innovation at this great event,” said John Tinsley. “Going forward, it will be exciting to see just how much Neural MT can enhance the fluency in certain translations, such as those between Asian and European languages.”
The expert team of MT scientists and engineers at Iconic is already working on the integration of NMT components into Iconic’s proprietary Ensemble Architecture with plans to launch commercial NMT systems within 2017.
The Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) is the world’s leading trade association for the language industry.
