Iconic fortifies position as technology innovator, welcomes three new machine translation specialists
- New scientists and experts to further improve Iconic machine translation (MT) quality, scalability, and integrate neural MT
Dublin – October 27, 2016 – Iconic Translation Machines (Iconic), a leading Irish machine translation (MT) software and solutions provider, today announced the addition of Dr. Bogdan Sacaleanu, (Dr.) Jian Zhang, and Dr. Rohit Gupta to its specialist MT team.
The three specialists bring combined expertise in MT domain adaptation, quality evaluation, scalability, and neural MT, further fortifying Iconic’s position as a leading provider of superior quality MT solutions, customised for specific subject areas.
“I am delighted to welcome aboard Bogdan, Jian, and Rohit to our diverse and multinational team,” said Iconic CEO John Tinsley. “I am confident they will all contribute greatly to Iconic’s growth in the coming year, specifically with our collaboration on neural MT with the world-leading MT group at the ADAPT Centre, enabling us to better tackle challenging languages and complex content types for MT in industry verticals such as legal, financial, and life sciences, among others.”
Dr. Bogdan Sacaleanu is Iconic’s new Technical Consultant. He holds a PhD in Computational Linguistics from the Universität des Saarlandes, Saarbrücken. He previously worked at IBM as a Senior Research Software Engineer and at ShopCo, a universal shopping cart browser extension, as Head of Artificial Intelligence. “I am very impressed with Iconic’s MT technology. It’s a sophisticated, flexible, and modular platform. I will be working on further enhancing the scalability of Iconic’s MT solution, allowing us to process more translations, faster.” said Dr. Sacaleanu. Bogdan will also be working on further strengthening the responsiveness and resilience of Iconic’s proprietary MT architecture, Ensemble Architecture™.
Jian Zhang joins Iconic as a Machine Translation Scientist. He is also currently completing a PhD focused on domain-adapted MT at Dublin City University, Ireland. “I’ve recently been working on developing our neural MT platform at Iconic, which is a really exciting development. In fact, neural MT is the focus of my PhD research, so it’s work I am very passionate about.” said Jian. Jian’s PhD research will be instrumental in enhancing the quality of Iconic’s MT output for complex content and subject matter areas. He was previously an Analyst Programmer and Software Developer at the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL), Dublin City University.
Also joining as a Machine Translation Scientist, Dr. Rohit Gupta brings years of MT research and design expertise to the Iconic team. Rohit was part of the EXPERT research group based out of Wolverhampton University, which explores innovative translation memory and MT technologies. He has been involved in many MT projects, working on translation memory matching and retrieval as well as MT evaluation. “Iconic’s focus on deep MT expertise and state of the art technology made it a natural fit for someone like me who has spent years researching the field.” said Rohit, who previously proposed his own MT evaluation metric, ReVal, using neural networks, at EMNLP 2015 in Lisbon. Rohit will be closely involved with the integration of neural MT into Iconic’s Ensemble Architecture™, helping Iconic to provide MT solutions of unrivalled translation quality for complex languages.
Iconic plans to integrate and launch commercial Neural MT systems within 2017.
